Some recent data on private equity related job creation : in Europe, since 2000 => 1 MILLION... (a much higher rate of employment growth than their publicly owned competitors)
Private equity firms have bought more than €500bn ($591bn) worth of companies in the European Union this millennium and now employ an estimated six million people across the Continent, according to the most comprehensive survey yet commissioned into venture capital job creation. In the four years to 2004, mature buyout-backed businesses created a net 420,000 jobs, while venture-backed companies increased jobs by 630,000.

BTW: Given the relative ratio of money invested in buyout vs. venture project (in Europe buyout is around 4 to 5 time the size of venture if i remember well), it's a much higher efficency, from a job creation perspective on the venture front...
