Soft Edge and Hard Core
Interesting posting on how the networks are softening on the edge, and hardening on the core by Om Malik, This is exactely the theme that we explored last year at the SoftEdge Technology Conference.
Asterisk (a complete PBX in software that runs on Linux and provides all of the features you would expect from a PBX and more, does voice over IP in three protocols, and can interoperate with almost all standards-based telephony equipment using relatively inexpensive hardware) is a perfect example of the trend that will produce a lot of interesting software-centric innovation in the telecommunication space.
If you know of any other good example please email / post-a-comment...

Voice Publisher is an virtual automatic attendant system. Leveraging VoiceXML technology and voice browsing capability of telcos networks, it's a purely software, web-based service on the Internet.
No HW/SW to install, just a few clics to configure your call flow and the service is on.
That's another example of what you say. Innovative software on the egde, hardware on the core.
